VINECO Project: Application of Life Cycle Assessment for eco-innovation in wine production. (+ Info)

The challenge of our client

The VINECO project aims at providing businesses and other stakeholders in the wine sector of the Pyrenees- Mediterranean, with tools that help them to make a more efficient use of natural resources and foster competitiveness, innovation and international projection of the participating regions through the Eco-innovation in this sector.

These eco-innovative measures will be addressed, firstly, to the wineries participating in the pilot test. Secondly, these measures will be gathered in a best practices guide for the wine sector industry in this Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion that will help it to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.

The project will have duration of 12 months, stating in October 2013 and finishing in October 2014.

Partners of the project have been chosen among different stakeholders within the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion, being representatives of innovation in the field of research and environmental consulting (Cyclus Vitae Solutions, S.L) , innovation in the wine sector for regional development (Institut Français de la Vigne et du Vin Sud- Ouest) and economic promotion (Menorca Chamber of Commerce).

Technical excellence in sustainability, innovation applied to the wine sector, sustainable economic development and competitiveness make it a trinomial that is key that ensures the success of a project of this nature.

Solutions and services

  • Identification of elements / materials critical from an environmental point of view
  • Provide ecoinnovative proposals to reduce the environmental impact
  • Edition of “Good practices guide, in Catalan and French
  • Training and dissemination activities

Results and benefits

The VINECO project will analyze under environmentally point of view the wine production in the regions of Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Midi Pyrenées and Langedoc - Roussillon through studies of Life Cycle Analysis to assess the use of water and energy resources as well as emissions of greenhouse gases (carbon footprint ) associated with the activity of the wineries.

Eight wineries (2 for each participating region) will be selected to participate in pilot test in order to identify the critical points of water consumption, energy consumption and emissions of the processes of wine making. The obtained results will help to establish measures to improve energy efficiency and management of water resources for each phase of the wine production.
